I watched “Slumdog Millionaire” as refference for the study of “The White Tiger” – By Arvind Adiga

Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 British drama film directed by Danny Boyle , written by Simon Beaufoy, and produced by Christian Colson.

Character List:

1)    Jamal Malik: Main protagonist. Orphaned with his brother, Salim, from a young age. Jamal roams India after escaping from Maman, learning many things from his journey which allow him to answer the questions correctly while he was on Who Want T o Be A Millionaire. Jamal is very quite and vigilant. Always taking in his surroundings. He can also be cheeky at times which is evident during his time with Prem during the show. Unlike Salim, Jamal tried to make the most of his circumstances while also keeping a positive attitude and didn’t let the negativity of any situation set in. he is also very loyal which he proves by spending his whole life searching for Latika and always believing that Salim will do the right thing.

2)    Salim Malik: Salim is the Jamal’s older brother. At the beginning of the movie Salim starts out as a neutral party and exhibits classic older brother characteristics. Salim likes to be the center of the attention and in control from a young age. Salim had a leader’s personality with the morals of a criminal which make him become a lap dog to Maman during his time at the orphanges. Salim let his unfortunate circumstances in life turn him into an angry person which eventually tore him and his brother apart untill the very end of the movie. At the end, Salim sacrificed his own life for the happiness and freedom of both Latika and Jamal.

3)    Latika: Latika is Jamal’s love interest and orphaned at the same time as Jamal and Salim, they became friends. Latika experienced an equally miserable journey through life like Jamal and Salim. She was sold into prostitution and had to marry Javed he gangster, she was physically and emotionally abused. Latika was very quite and accepted the hand she’s been dealt. Once she separated from Jamal and Salim as a child. She kept her head down and did whatever she was told.

4)    Prem Kumar: The host of the show . Prem was a narcissist and seemed to look down upon Jamal’s social status.

Movie Summary:

“Slumdog Millionaire” is a story about a young orphan from the slums of Mumbai named Jamal Malik with the whole nation watching, Jamal found himself one question away from winning millons on India’s version of “Who wants to be a Millionaire”. After the show breaks for the evening before he was to answer the final question for the big win, Jamal was arrested on suspiction of cheating. In a desperate effort to prove his innocence. He began to share his life story with the investigators to reveal the key to all of the correct answers. The investigators listened to Jamal’s story, about growing up on the streets, alongside his brother Salim. The officials began to question his ambition behind entering the game. As the game conclude, Jamal’s reason for playing was revealed. Also, he relied heavily on fate to win the game.
