Mathew Arnold: The Study of Poetry

 1) I agree with Matthew's view that attachment and emotion affects creativity. The creator should not be influenced by historical or personal judgements. People can enjoy prejudice-less, real and genuine creation better. According to Rabindranath Tagore, “Great calm, generous detachment, selfless love, disinterested effort: these are what make for success in life". Lord Krishna's life is one of the great example of disinterestedness or detachment.

(2) In contemporary times, Matthew's view about "Touchstone Method" seems not appropriate. "Comparison is the thief of joy". comparing literature, poetry or whatever else will only serve to make people unhappy. Creation should be judged by uniqueness, acceptance, principles and popularity not by mere comparison.
