Archetypal Criticism: Thinking task

The Archetypes of Literature (1951): Northrop Frye

  1. What is Archetypal Criticism? What does the archetypal critic do?
  2. What is Frye trying prove by giving an analogy of ' Physics to Nature' and 'Criticism to Literature'?
  3. Share your views of Criticism as an organised body of knowledge. Mention relation of literature with history and philosophy.
  4. Briefly explain inductive method with illustration of Shakespeare's Hamlet's Grave Digger's scene.
  5. Briefly explain deductive method with reference to an analogy to Music, Painting, rhythm and pattern. Give examples of the outcome of deductive method.
  6. Refer to the Indian seasonal grid (below). If you can, please read small Gujarati or Hindi or English poem from the archetypal approach and apply Indian seasonal grid in the interpretation.
1)'Archetypal criticism' means denotes recurrent narrative designs and it may that to art into images and patterns of one other character and theme type of in literature. The archetypal critic tries to find this pattern, symbols and myths in present literary works.
    2) Northrop Frye trying proves by giving an analogy of ‘Physics to Nature’ and ‘Criticism to Literature’. physics is an organized body of Knowledge about nature, and a student of it says that he is learning physics, not that he is learning nature. Art, like nature, is the subject of a systematic study, and has to be distinguished from the study itself, which is criticism.
    3) Criticism as an organised body of knowledge means we learned progressively. And our experience shows that there is also something progressive about learning of literature. and in this way it is directly connected with history and philosophy. and both are important thing in literature.
    4) Inductive method is systematic method, that from particular to universal or larger vision. and The use of inductive method in the foreground of the grave-digger scene in Hamlet.the scene of grave digging is an image of corruption and  decay. during this scene for the first time hamlet admits his deep love for ophelia.
    5) Deductive method,it is from general to particular.some arts move in times like painting wee see the paterns.but when time passes in music we see the paterns and painting wee see the rhytham same thing happen in the literature.for examples-leibstod.love and death is common thing in all literature.
    6) Poem:  'Aaya basant'

        Aaya basant hansata gaata,
        rang-birangi phool khilaata.

Jhoom rahi hai har daali daali,
        kook rahi koyal matwaali.

Gun gun gun gun bhanwara gaata,
        titali raani se batiyaata.

        Khush ho bachche patang udaate,
        wo-kaata ka shor machaate.

       Sardi kehti ab hai jaana,
       mausam lagata bahut suhaana.

       Aaya basant hansata gaata,
       masti ki gaagar chhalakaata.
