“The Nightingale and the Rose” By Oscar Wilde



Overview of the Short Story:

The Nightingale and the Rose is written by Oscar Wilde. The story is about nightingale who decides to help the student find a red rose for his lover but ends – up giving up her life.



Theme:

The theme for the Nightingale and the rose is the changing of the human emotion. In the beginning of the story, the student wants to get that rose for the princess and he is excited but when he realizes that he does not have that rose he becomes devastated. Later on when he finds that rose the nightingale left him, again once more he becomes thrilled, when the princess rejects him he becomes  completely full of hatred and anger.

Symbolism:

The red rose symbolizes love. It is so hard to find and sometimes it involves scarifies and pain. the student anything he is told. For example, the princess going to the dance with him if he gave her a rose.  The princess symbolizes materialism because she picked partner based on the gifts they give her instead of the feelings they had for her.

Rising action:

So, the student went home too look in his backyard to see if he had a red rose, but he didn’t.

Falling action:

The nightingale flew all around town until he found a rose bush. The bush told her that because it was out of season, the rose wouldn’t be able to sacrifice her own life in order to help make the rose bloom, and so she did.

So, in this short – story student who wanted to go to a dance with the girl he liked. The girl said she would dance with him if he got her a red rose. But the student was unable to find a red rose. A nightingale overheard them and decided to go search for a rose herself. The nightingale ended up sacrificing herself to grow a rose for the student.  The student quickly got the flower and went to the princess’s house so he could give her the rose. But she declined it. Another man had already given her a necklace which was worth much more. So, she disregarded the rose. And the student threw the rose on the road where it fell in the gutter and he went back home completely heartbroken and got over his feelings in half a day.
