“She Walks In Beauty” – By Lord Byron

Lord Byron was an English Poet who wrote She walks in beauty in 1885 about his cousin ( by marriage) Lady Wilmot Horton. He saw her at a party of Lady Sitwell’s. Lady Wilmot was wearing a black mourning dress, which is reflected by her dark attributes in the poem. The morning after the party, Lord Byron wrote this poem. Lord Byron was Known to be promiscuous. At the time this poem written, there was a lot of tension in regards to the Napoleonic war. The can be seen as the darkness and night in the poem.



Style and form of the poem:

This poem reflects the Romanticism movement of the time. The romantic nature of this poem reflects this movement. Lord Byron creates unity in this poem through his choice of words . Each stanza shows something slightly different about woman, but also ties together with similar themes in each part. His expression shows the tender feelings he experiences towards her.

Theme of the poem:

The theme of this poem is the internal and physical beauty of this exceptional woman.

Tone and mood of the poem:

The tone of the poem is very romantic, soft and claim. The poem gives off a “love struck”, very loving mood. And the mood of the poem helps express Lord Byron admiration towards the girl.



In first stanza he compares to dark yet beautiful things and starry skies. He also contrasts the ides and says she is what’s best of dark and bright like tender light, referring to her eyes.

In second stanza he continues to contrast her beauty with light and dark but he says she is the perfect in between . he now starts to describes her inner beauty saying her thoughts are sweet and she ‘s pure.

In third stanza he now describes her as calm and soft. He sees her smile and glow and says her mind is still at peace and her heart is still innocent. ( She’s a good girl, classy sophisticated and any man would be licky to have her love.)
